Flowers Keller celebrates Gideon’s Day

March 18th marks the anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright, the 1963 Supreme Court decision that affirmed an individual’s constitutional right to counsel even if they cannot afford it. This ruling laid the foundation for modern public defender systems and remains an essential component of fair judicial proceedings.

As a firm of former public defenders, we recognize the significance of Gideon’s promise that every person—regardless of financial means—should be able to obtain zealous legal representation when the government tries to take away their liberty. Gideon continues to shape our work and reinforce the principle that justice must be available to all.

We are proud to honor Gideon’s Day and the ongoing commitment of defense attorneys who carry its message forward. That said, we recognize that this country has never delivered on the fundamental promise of Gideon, and we look forward to the day that everyone in this country receives the zealous representation that the Constitution promises them when the government threatens to put them in a cage.
